Bob Odenkirk stars in a John Wick knock-off (it’s the same writer, but he knew what he was doing) that takes place in a Midwest suburb instead of Manhattan.
I wanted to like this movie. The action is great (although tonally inconsistent, ranging from semi-realistic to flat-out cartoonish) and the cinematography and soundtrack are standouts. Odenkirk himself carried the movie surprisingly well. The problem is that almost all of the characters are paper-thin, and the main character’s actions never feel quite justified. You keep waiting for the movie to have a self-aware moment but, in the end, the entire message seems to be: “this guy started a fight without provocation that left a lot of people dead, but it’s okay because they were Evil Russians and he felt emasculated, so it’s more important that he gets to feel alive.”
