The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

The dark, brooding Batman has always been asking for self-aware comedy, but this is the best yet. The dialogue is snappy, the constant commentary on the superhero genre is extremely well done, and even the ending (which was a little muddled in some rather cliched children’s animation “action sequences”) had enough parts I could laugh at that I was willing to sit through it. The voice acting (with the sad exception of the Joker) was brilliant. For anyone who is a fan of Batman, this is an excellent parody.

Yet, it’s only that. Yes, it is a pretty well rounded spoof and I laughed my way through it, but it will only ever be a joke dependent on the originals. It takes more than cheap shots, true, but it doesn’t do any of the characters real justice. Still, it knows that, and doesn’t try to be anything more. The movie succeeds because of that.

It’s a pretty good movie, for an animated comedy.  I enjoyed it. I might even watch it again.

But it’s no Batman.

Dinner Recommendations:

Shirley Temples. A tasty, kid-friendly mockery of something for adults.
